Vehicle Description 1978 Volkswagon Westfalia Camper Bus - Champagne Edition This beauty was purchased by current owners in 2007.
Maintenance records for current owner and prior previous owners are available back to 11/92 (the original owner's records were not passed along) with significant repairs and updating done by current owners including new re-built engine installed in 2017.
Owners are selling because they've retired and moved to an area where they used to drive Tillie to and camp.
EXTERIOR:
Repainted in original colors, Agate Brown and Pastel White in 2007.
Champagne Editions came from the factory with a two-tone exterior, and were only produced in 1977 and 1978 (both rare).
Window seals, headlight rings, front turn signals, taillights, antenna, mirrors and pop-top canvas were all replaced at the time of the repainting (2007).
Both bumpers replaced in 2012.
All remain in very good condition.
Side mirrors and wiper arms were replaced in 2020.
This was a bus that was used as it was intended, for trips and camping, but was stored indoors each winter since its purchase in 2007.
Prior to that, it spent its entire previous life in California vehicle, limiting rust.
INTERIOR:
Interior is in good/very good condition.
Front seats, bench and rear mattress section were reupholstered in original plaid; upper bed is original fabric in excellent condition.
Note the all-brown interior accessories (Champagne edition):
Original clock (works and keeps time), dash, steering column and wheel, gear-shift and kick panels.
Rear seat folds into a bed, easily fits 2 adults over 6'.
The pop-top canvas is in excellent condition (replaced in 2007).
Upper bed also sleeps 2 adults.
Numerous cabinets, cubby holes, etc.
including spare-tire cover/storage between driver's seat and the stove.
Nearly all laminate is original.
Refrigerator works and runs on either propane or electricity, stove works on propane.
Sink pump works, but tank has pin-hole leak and has not been used in several years.
Small propane heater also works, but has not been used recently.
All curtains are original to the bus, and snap to secure them in place, including the front windshield privacy curtain.
Also included is the over-the-front-seat child's cot (or storage platform), as well as rear hatch and side door mosquito nets.
Small storage box between front seats buckles in place, but is moveable to use as extra seat or footstool for passenger seat when it's rotated to face the rear (seat also reclines slightly).
New 3-point seat-belts installed in driver and passenger seat.
Original passenger lap-belts in place on bench seat.
Pedestal table can be left in place (position can be locked), or removed and stored while traveling, and swivels for convenience.
Driver's side crank window had all rubber gaskets replaced in 2008.
Replacement kit included for passenger's side crank window.
Both windows work as is.
Additional gear includes a Westfalia Helsinki cover for bus when stored outside, and an 8' x 10' Ezy-Up Awning (clamps to rain gutter on passenger side).
MECHANICAL:
Original odometer now reads 72,000 miles; prior owner records document a total of 172,000 miles.
New re-built engine installed in late 2017, has fewer than 5,000 miles on it.
New muffler in 2019.
Extensive exhaust and mechanical overhaul in 2010 (gas tank re-lined, vacuum and fuel pumps replaced, pressure gauge and dashboard temperature gauge repaired, new brakes and parts repaired, multiple hoses, bushings, belts and seals inspected and replaced).
Recent clutch housing repair.
Owner's VW Mechanic looked it over with no additional service recommendations.
Runs great, classic VW bus sound.
Private, insured shipping transport is available at buyer's cost.
